“All Good Gifts: The Earth as a Gift”

Dr. Shore-Gross was ordained as a Jesuit Priest in 1976, but left the order and the Catholic Church two years later when he and another priest fell in love. Thus started his career as an activist on LGBTQ issues and a leading thinker on both Queer Theology and Earth Justice. Dr. Shore-Gross has written a number of books on both subjects and currently serves on the UCC’s denominational Environmental Justice Council.

In this wide-ranging sermon, Dr. Shore-Gross examines where both society in general and the church, specifically, are today on the core question of “To whom does the Earth belong?” He took as his text the following excerpt from Margaret Atwood’s poem The Moment.

No, they whisper. You own nothing. You were a visitor, time after time climbing the hill, planting the flag, proclaiming.

We never belonged to you. You never found us.

Ir was always the other way around.”
